largekava.jpegOn Saturday 24/10/09, Siosiua Lafitani Tofua'ipangai was interviewed by Mrs 'Eseta
'Aholelei from the Australian Sydney Museum (ASM) for two and half hours about the cultural and traditional importance and implications of kava bowl (kumete kava), and kava practice in Tongan society over the centuries.

This is part of a Pilot Study by the ASM to begin in gathering information and traditional knowledge on Tongan and Moanan artifacts from their native people and experts for their collections, with the intention to select three or four objects out from the whole lots of individual Island culture and publish on a new internet program.

‘Eseta and her work associates at the ASM are working towards selecting three or four artifacts with their traditional significance in terms of cultural, social, moral and political explanations and implications.

Siosiua was interviewed about the artifact of kumete in association to the myth on the origin of kava, and how different kava ceremonies/circles are conducted in Tongan culture, with their individual roles in maintaining socio-political order and preservation of traditional knowledge and skills for about thousand years.

Traditionally, there are three main kava ceremonies/circles, the Royal Kava Ceremony/Circle (Taumafa Kava/Tala Hau), Chiefly Kava Ceremony (‘Ilo Kava/Tala ‘Alofi) and Extended-Family Kava Ceremony (Kava-‘a-Kainga/Tala Fatongia).

Not only that but there was more elaboration on the interconnection of kava ceremonies to most, if not all, other aspects of Tongan society, culture and history.

Kava ceremonies  can be seen as the traditional core and cultural heart of Tongan culture in that respect generally.

All status, obligations, best productions, etc., of culture and traditions in ancient Tonga were presented, shared and exchanged during Kava ceremonies, especially in the Royal Kava Circle (Taumafa Kava.Tala hau) during ancient national occassions such as 'Inasi.
