OFFICE OF THE HIGH COMMISSION OF THE KINGDOM OF TONGA, POUONO, CANBERRA
(HRH Crown Prince Tupouto'a-Lavaka, High Commissioner of Tonga for Australia)
First Swear In Ceremony in Australia by the High Commissioner of the Kingdom of Tonga to Australia HRH The Crown Prince Tupouto’a-Lavaka
· Tomorrow Saturday 12 December 2009 at ‘Pouono’ , will be a historic occasion where HRH The Crown Prince Tupouto’a-Lavaka High Commissioner of the Kingdom of Tonga to Australia will swear in 7 Australian Citizens to be re-admitted to Tongan Nationality under the Nationality (Amendment) Act 2007 which became law in August 2007.
· This historic ceremony is the first of its kind, and it solidifies the importance of the establishment of our High Commission in Australia.
(HRH Prince Nanasipau'u Tuku'aho, Prince Ata & Princess Latufuipeka Tuku'aho)·
The following people will be sworn in tomorrow:
1. ‘Isileli Jason Kioa (Melbourne)
2. Fiona Helen Mele Tuitamala Tangi (Sydney)
3. Geofery Taliauli Afeaki (Sydney)
4. Margot Elenor Ann Afeaki (Sydney)
5. Soakai Paulo Afeaki (Sydney)
6. Tevita Nikolasi Sisitoutai Afeaki (Sydney)
7. Matekisoli Sapate Afeaki (Sydney)
· This is a very historic occasion for the mission and especially for His Royal Highness The Crown Prince Tupouto’a-Lavaka who was the visionary behind the dual citizenship process when he was Prime Minister.
· Prior to the amendment coming into force, a Tongan subject who voluntarily became a naturalized citizen of another country was deemed to have ceased to be a Tongan citizen. Similarly a female Tongan subject who married a foreigner and voluntarily acquired the nationality of her husband also ceased to be a Tongan subject.
· Under the Nationality (Amendment) Act 2007 any person who ceased to be a Tongan subject prior to August 2007 may apply to the Minister responsible for Immigration for a certificate of re-admission to Tongan nationality.
· The Nationality (Amendment) Act 2007 also defines persons “deemed to be Tongan subjects” as: any person born in Tonga to a Tongan parent; any person born abroad to a Tongan father; any person born abroad of a Tongan mother; any non-Tongan who marries a Tongan (provided he declares his wish to become a Tongan subject and take the oath of allegiance); and any person naturalized under this Act.

* Siosiu Lafitani Tofua'ipangai & his partner Luseane Halaevalu Tuita, & Sioana Faupula, were the only members from the Media and Canberra Tongan Communty who were invited to attend this historic ceremony. Sioana is the President of Tongan Association and active member of the Civi Uniting Church and Ex-Students of Queen Salote College, brodcaster of the Association's weekly radio program at CMS 91.1FM, and wife of the late Rev Haloti Faupula. Siosiua and Luseane are both broadcasters for Pacific Island Youth Network (PIYN) on CMS Radio, founding members of PIYN, Phoenix Performing Arts of Moana, Phoenix Tas-Moanan Consultancy and Lo'au Research Society in Canberra.
Also Siosiua had the opportunity to discuss in details with Leimoni, Talia'uli & 'Isileli about the increase rate of our youth problems all over Australia, and also about a youth program for Tongans nation-wide, which has been organized by the Pouono High Commission, with the leadership of HRH Princess Nanasipau'u, to be in operation thtoughout 2010.
HRH Princess Tupouto'a Lavaka and Princess Ata were in part participated in this discussion, before they went for lunch, while the rest of the other four continued, with the common belief and conclusion at the end of the day, that leaders of our Tongan communities in Australia should take action together on this issue very urgently, before it's too late.
